Are Prescribed Drug Treatments
the Answer for ADHD Kids?It is a known
fact that approximately 60 to 65% of the parents of ADHD kids will
put their children on a drug treatment program. The most common
drugs that are used are Ritalin which is in the methylphenidates
family, Strattera which is a non-stimulant drug, and other
antidepressant drugs in the atomoxetine family. Addrerall is another
most common prescribed drug that is included in the amphetamines
family.
Parents who give their children these drugs are hoping that the
drugs will cure their bad behavior at school and home, help their
child focus, achieve better academic performance, gain self esteem
and better social skills these are common problems of children with
ADHD.
Studies have shown that both the amphetamines and methylphenidates’
were helpful in treating children with ADHD, with the exception of
their behavior problems.
How do the parents of ADHD kids rate the effectiveness of giving
their children the above mentioned drugs? Studies show that 50 to
60% say they helped to improve behavior but when you break down the
drug effectiveness with each symptom the percentage is much lower.
Only 25 to 35% said it helped to improve behavior. For improving
social skills, the percentage was only 18 to 20% and self esteem
only 18% of the parents said it was helpful.
What is so surprising is that of all the children who are on
psychiatric drugs only about 18 to 20% actually sees a psychiatrist,
psychologists, or learning disability specialist that are
professionally trained in their field. Over 65% of ADHD children are
being diagnosed and treated by a pediatrician.
Parents have become dissatisfied with prescription drugs. The
biggest complaints from parents are the side affects their children
experiencing by using these drugs. Such as: trouble with their
digestive system, lack of appetite, can’t sleep, weight loss, and
irritability.
According to Patrick Tolan of the University of Virginia, I quote,
“Drugs are simply not capable of correcting all ADHD related
problem. With medication the child isn’t so distracted, and that
makes it easier to learn”. He also said, “but its not going to teach
the child problem-solving skills or give children the ability to
stop and think things through.
The biggest complaint from parents is that the drugs prescribed
don’t treat all the symptoms of ADHD. Doctors who diagnose a child
with ADHD will normally prescribe drug therapy, but the drugs fail
in treating and curing all the symptoms of ADHD.
Parents have two choices watching their children be held hostage by
a drug or go to a natural ADHD remedy that treats ADHD without the side
effects. |
