When people are under
stress, their day is nothing but a hassle.
-
how
are they going to meet that dead line for the
boss
-
getting the kids
where they need to be
-
long lines in the supper market
-
traffi
-
the
household budget
-
and other small irritations
all add to stress.
Stress also comes with
life-changing events and crises such as losing
a job, divorce, a major illness, children
rebelling, fear, and feelings of anger or
frustration.
The Webster’s Dictionary
defines stress as, “mental or physical
tension, urgency, and pressure”. Stress is any
condition or situation that places undue
strain on the body.
A situation to one person
could be so overwhelming that they can’t cope;
where as, that same situation to another
person could be what gives them energy in
other words the “spice of life”. We are
forced to adjust to those stressful
situations. Unless you can find a way to
release the tension you become vulnerable to
illnesses, from a common cold to a heart
attack.
Stress can be a positive
motivator, challenging you to reach the goals
you have set. When those demands and changes
become overwhelming then it has become a
negative stress.
Negative stress is
sometime difficult to determine, our bodies
can react to stress in many different ways.
Stress can cause you heart rate to increase,
shortness of breath, high blood pressure,
chronic back and neck pains, a lot of
headaches, sleep problems, always feeling
fatigue even after a good night sleep,
anxiety, worrying over little things, etc.
To manage stress some
people turn to overeating, smoking, alcohol,
or taking pills. With these methods of coping
come dangerous side effects such as obesity,
cancer, and alcoholism. They can become
addictions that will destroy lives.
There are better ways to
handle stress. By expressing your feelings to
others you are able to release your feelings
and better understand them. Crying is an
emotional healing process that relives
tension. Writing, hobbies, physical activity,
and art can be natural remedies for stress.
Diet plays a critical
role in helping the body deal with stress.
When a person is under a great deal of stress
the body’s supply of glucose, (the body major
supply of fuel) is depleted. The body starts
breaking down the protein that is in your
muscles to replace the fuel that was depleted
so that your body can function. Carbohydrates
which come from sugar and starches supply the
fast energy that is need for the body to
function. To prevent the muscle from
deteriorating protein must be added to your
diet such as: lean meat, grains, lentil, dried
peas, bean, fish, milk, and egg whites.
Unfortunately when stress is prolonged there
are those who have to force themselves to eat
while others “Binge Eaters” either way it just
compounds the problem.
Comfort food can also
relive stress. Quietly relaxing with a cup of
herbal tea and a piece of toast that helps
restore depleted glucose supplies. Chocolate
and sweets have a calming effect. Add foods
that are easy to digest like puddings and
yogurts. Stress can play havoc with your
digestion system. Avoid fatty and spicy foods
they are difficult for the stomach to digest
and can cause heart burn and indigestion.
Avoid any thing that stimulants the body such
as alcohol, caffeine drinks and cigarettes
they can add to that jittery feeling.
A balanced diet of
fruits, vegetables, and whole grain products
along with a good vitamin supplement with
mineral is needed to compensate for nutrients
that were lost because of stress. Stress
increases the need for Vitamin A and C,
thiamine, riboflavin, and the stress vitamins
the B’s (taking high doses of anti-stress
vitamin will not calm jittery nerves it is
recommended that you take the recommended
dose). It's a fact
of life; we live in an increasingly complex
society. We need to educate ourselves and
make the necessary changes in our diet, add a
good liquid vitamin and mineral supplement to
help us meet the emotional, physical, mental
changes and demands that we may face in our
life..
