As we get older we find ourselves not being
able to remember as well as we used to. This
makes many of us worry about what our memory
will be like in the future.
Our brain has the ability to remember our
thoughts, moods and our attitudes this all
happens in the central part of the brain.
Each of our five senses leaves memories in our
brain. For example; the sense of taste:
If we eat a lemon, it will taste sour and
every time we see a lemon, our memory will
tell us it’s sour. The more feelings,
thoughts, and action we experience, the more
likely we’ll be able to remember.
Research has found when we have an inadequate
amount of the B vitamins it can cause memory
loss, mental, and emotion imbalances. This is
especially true for alcoholics.
The brain has a great communication system.
The neurons talk to one another by the means
of chemicals knows as neuron transmitters. The
neuron transmitters are developed when needed
by our amino acids and other nutrients.
Our neuron transmitter job includes adjusting
the amount of sleep we need, the level of pain
we feel, and hormone secretion.
Our brain is affected from the levels of
serotonin and tryptophan that the body
receives after we have eaten a high protein
meal. Very little tryptophan reaches the brain
because a larger amount of amino acids reaches
the brain first. When we eat a high
carbohydrate meal insulin is created has the
tendency to move our amino acids to lower
amount and creating a liberal amount of
tryptophan to the brain where the tryptophan
are changed to serotonin which then causes the
body to become tried and sleepy.
To help us to improve our memory we can do
simple exercises to help us remember. By doing
this, the relevant information will be
retained in your long term memory. Develop
your mind by remembering a certain lecture,
for example; ask yourself what was the topic,
who spoke, what was his main message and how
did the speaker present his material? Using a
calendar, write down birthdays, appointments,
and due dates, and review your calendar
everyday. Take care of your health by taking a
good vitamin supplement and eating a balanced
diet. Exercise increases the supply of oxygen
to the brain which supports brain cell growth.
It also lowers the blood pressure, which may
reduce memory problems
