Sometimes in the course of life we
experience depression due to stress that comes
with our daily responsibilities. We can accept
this as a part of life. Statistics show that
10% of the population will suffer depression
for a short time, feeling down, unhappy, or
pessimistic. This is called short term
depression.
Long term depression is characterized when
self-doubt, self-criticism, or a pessimistic
outlook becomes so persistent that you can’t
find the pleasure in every day life
activities. Winston Churchill had what he
called the “black dog” which was really
periods of clinic (long term) depression. He
was so depressed he couldn’t function for
weeks and months at a time. It has been
described that you’re in a very black fog
trying to find the light or (sunshine) again.
Signs of depression can produce a change in
eating habits; either having no appetite which
will result in weight loss, or weight gain
because you can’t get enough food especially
carbohydrates.
Those who suffer from depression have
little energy and
lack of concentration. Some will show
signs of dementia, have many aches and pains,
irritable, and feel anxious. You feel that
your future will not change. Your sleeping
becomes disrupted, with early awakening after
only a few hours of sleep. To family and
friends you look sad, withdrawn and totally
preoccupied with yourself. People who have
Parkinson’s disease, stroke, cancer,
arthritis, and thyroid disease can’t
distinguish if the depression comes from the
chemical change in the brain or if they are
depressed because they have that particular
disease. Depression and its symptoms can come
from medication that has been prescribed by a
doctor to combat the disease.
Depression has been divided in three groups.
Reactive depression: A physical or
emotional depression because of a chronic
illness or bereavement. Endogenous
depression: There is no obvious cause but a
family history of depression may exist.
Manic-depressive psychosis: This
condition may be a single depression or series
of mood swings between despair and elation.
Anti-depressants drugs such as Prozac, Zoloft,
and Paxil can be prescribe to help with
depression. Along with these drugs come the
side effects such as weight gain or weight
loss. You need watch your diet to maintain a
good healthy weight if weight gain occurs from
the anti-depressants drugs. Deficiencies of
amino acids, vitamins, and nutrients often
cause depression. Feelings of depression come
from reduced levels of neurotransmitters which
consist of mood controlling molecules such as
dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine. The
brain relies on the neurotransmitters to
control moods, thoughts and emotions.
Research has found that by adding natural
foods consisting of proteins, meat, and dairy
products to your diet along with high potency
liquid multi-vitamins, herbs, and minerals
daily which include St. John’s Wort,
Sunflower, Pumpkin Seed and with GABA.
Vitamin B’s are 70 % to 80 % effective in
manufacturing the co factors which are needed
to produce the neurotransmitters needed to
keep the brain healthy and increase the
feelings of well being.
