What Does ADHD Stand For?
What Does it Mean?

Today more people tend to remember names of titles, places and
things easier with the use of acronyms. Wikipedia defines acronyms
and initialisms as abbreviations formed from the initial components
in a phrase or name. These components may be individual letters (as
in CEO) or parts of words (as in Benelux and Ameslan). There is no
universal agreement on the precise definition of the various terms,
or on written usage. While popular in recent English, such
abbreviations have historical use in English as well as other
languages.
ADHD is a commonly used acronym for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder. It may be the most common childhood disorders in recent
years. ADHD affects about 2 million
children in the United
States, most of them boys.
The medical and scientific communities have not yet determined what
causes Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder nor have they
decided whether it should be classified as a disease.
ADHD symptoms include difficulty staying focused and paying
attention, difficulty controlling behavior, and hyperactivity
(over-activity). As children with ADHD grow older, the symptoms may
decrease or go into remission. For many, however, the symptoms
persist into adulthood.
Treatments can relieve many of the disorder's symptoms, but there is
no cure. With treatment, most people with ADHD can be successful in
school and lead productive lives.
Researchers are developing more effective treatments and
interventions, and using new tools such as brain imaging, to better
understand ADHD and to find more effective ways to treat and prevent
ADHD. Studies indicate people with ADHD behavior have an abnormal
blood sugar level. In addition, other researchers have found
imbalances of the essential minerals. |
