ADHD Symptoms In Adults -
8 million Adults Are Affected By This Disorder!
People tend to believe that
ADHD, (Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder) affects children only. The latest studies
have found that 60% of children
who suffer from ADHD will also suffer the disorder into adulthood.
It is estimated that 8 million adults in the United States have this
disorder and few adults have been diagnosed or treated for Adult
ADHD.
The symptoms of ADHD in both men and women (famous
and not so famous) range from: chronic lateness, forgetfulness,
impulsiveness, and anger control. The anxiety in adults is much
higher than in children which results in mood swing, and depression.
ADHD adults are very intelligent but have a history of poor
performance in school with low achievement scores resulting in
repeating a grade or even quitting school. They have more
disciplinary actions than other students because of their behavior,
unable to control their anger and poor organization skills.
Studies have found adults with ADHD; have low esteem which leads
them to change employers because of poor job performance. They are
offered little occupational advancement because of their behavior
problems. They are unable to focus and follow directions. They tend
to have an addictive personality. They may abuse alcohol, cigarette
smoking, and use illegal drugs. Adults with ADHD have more driving
violations. Their licenses are suspended, or they are cited for
speeding, or involved in more car accidents.
Multiple marriages and failed marriages that end up in either
separation or divorce are most common with adults with ADHD.
The most common form of treatment for adults diagnosed with ADHD is
stimulant drugs (Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall and Dexedrin). The
drugs help improve ADHD symptoms in adults. There, are however some
drawbacks as well. Case studies have found that it is not uncommon
for adults to have problems with drug abuse. The short acting
stimulants that the doctor prescribes to treat their ADHD, may wear
off and since adults administer the medications themselves, they may
forget to take the medication as prescribed on a daily basics. Not
talking the prescribed drugs regularly can cause more: emotional,
social, and vocational frustration for adults who suffer from ADHD.
It may be harder to have normal life.
Other methods of treatment can be used. Nutritional treatment can
lower the occurrence of side effects that the prescription drug
treatment causes such as: headaches, insomnia, dizziness, and
unnatural or medicated feeling.
It is important that adults who have been diagnosed with ADHD to be
well educated about their disorder so they can make the right
decision about the treatment that would be best for them. |
