ADHD School - The Roll of Special Education,
in the Classroom for the ADHD Child
Special
Education classes within the school system can play an important
roll in a child’s education. A Special Education class is available
in most schools to help children with learning disabilities. All
schools are required, by law to provide this class to children that
qualify. How can a child qualify for this class? First the child
needs to be tested in order to be placed in the correct class. This
evaluation is given by a team of professional educators that can
determine why the child is having trouble learning. If the
evaluation is negative the parent can request another evaluation
from an Independent Education Evaluation team. There are strict
rules that are required for this test and the test may be harder to
acquire. Or if necessary the parents can have a private evaluation
for the child. Check with the school district first and make sure
that the independent test will be accepted. Most school districts
are required by law, to consider the results of these tests in
placement of the child in a Special Education program. If the child
qualifies, a professional educator will set up an educational plan
for the child. The U.S. Office of Special Education Program can aid
in giving you information to help the child. It is important to
create an Individualized Education Plan for the child. (IEP)
There are several learning disabilities that qualify a child
for Special Education Program. Some are:
- ADD and ADHD - (Attention
Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) which
is defined as a child having difficulty in understanding certain
word and sounds, having a speech impediment, unable to express
him/herself with words, or having difficulty in reading , spelling,
or math.
- Tourette Syndrom e- which can be repetitive mannerisms, such as
facial twitches, blinking eyes constantly, or making sounds or
blurting out words, sounds or sniffs.
- ODD or Oppositional Defiant Disorder - which are having tantrums,
defiant, stubborn, refuses to obey and arguing with adults. Research
has found that ODD is diagnosed mostly in boys.
- Conduct Disorder - which is a child that lies, steals, and bullies
other children. They are also very aggressive toward people and
animals and destroy and vandalize property. This can be the child
that later will experiment with drugs.
- Anxiety Depression - which, when diagnosed early, the child will have
a better chance of handling the problems that come with ADHD.
- Bipolar Disorder- which is defined as extreme mood swings, from high
to low with a mixture of depression and irritability. Some symptoms
can be present in both Bipolar Disorder and ADHD. A child can have
high energy and a reduced need for sleep at the same time.
Through
testing, it has been found that 20-30 % of the children tested have
specific learning disabilities along with ADHD. It is time to the
child when the behavior problems are continual and the child is
inattentive, hyperactive, impulsive, or under academic levels, or is
having behavior problems. The child may be diagnosed with ADD or
ADHD. Having the child tested provides the parent and school with
a diagnosis and recommendations of way to help the child. The best
age to begin the testing is between 6-12 years old. The doctors will
evaluate evidence obtained from the child’s teachers, school
professionals, caregivers and of course the parents.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is a law that will
help a parent know the educational rights of the child diagnosed
with ADD/ADHD. Searching other legal resources will also help a
parent. How can a Special Education class help a child?
Parents should keep in close contact with the child’s teacher and
work together to provide the child with the best education possible,
at home and at school. Make sure the teacher understands ADD/ ADHD.
Seating the child closer to the teacher in the classroom may help,
or the teacher repeating the class instructions more than once can
help the child with ADHD. The parent and teacher can help the child
learn to stay more organized can help the child. The Special
Education class teacher will also help the child by boosting his/her
self esteem for good behavior and giving constant consequences for
unacceptable behavior in the classroom.
The Special Education teacher will also be aware of resources
that are available for teaching children with Attention Deficit
Disorder, from the U.S. Department of Education. There are many
helpful reports to help the child to maintain focus and attention.
A child’s bet advocate are the parents. They are going to be helping
the child have a bright and happy future in their educational years. |
