ADD vs. ADHD
Symptoms in Children and Adults
Children and adults tend to be very impulsive. They act before they
think they have a very moody personality happy one moment and mad
and frustrated the next and they tend to get distracted and forget
easily when given directions. They are likely to have temper
tantrums when they don’t get their way, and become indifferent to
any form of punishment administered to them. Children and adults
diagnosed with ADHD are very determined to get their way and have a
hard time letting someone tell them the way of doing things. The
diagnoses of a child with these tendencies, went from hyperactivity
to ADD “Attention Deficit Disorder”
The definition of ADD; from 1980 edition of the DSM III (Diagnostic
Statistic Manual), “People (including
famous celebrities) who
had a problem with concentrating, focusing, staying still, ADD was
the term used to describe the disorder.” The term ADD is no longer
used and the term ADHD has taken over. “In 1987 the (Diagnostic
Statistic Manual as DSM IIIR) it is listed as
ADHD. It has been broken
into three behavioral tendencies: inattentiveness, impulsive, and a
combination of both.”
Mental hyperactivity is most common today because the brain is
receiving an excess of material through the electronic age of
computers, television, and videos. In the past children would be
less hyper because they ran and played to release the mental stress
and the bottle up energy. It has been proven that children who spend
hours on the computer and playing video games will have a hard time
interacting with other children and thinking for themselves.
Studies has also proven that
diet is also related to
ADHD, especially with the over consumption of sugar.
Sugar has been found to be as addictive
as cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs. Sugar is so abundant in our foods
that it is necessary to read labels before you buy. Sugar has a
profound effect on the mind, body and emotions of children and
adults with ADHD. New
studies have found that food with yellow and red dyes also
contribute to the symptoms of ADHD.
To help a child or adult who suffers from ADHD, it is important take
a good multi vitamin (a liquid vitamin is recommended because
absorption rate is 95% where as taking a pill you body will only
absorb about 45%). Eat a well balance diet which includes fresh
vegetables, grains, and proteins being careful to give fruit that is
low in natural sugar. It is especially important, if not critical
that during a child’s developing years, a well balanced diet is
available along with lots of exercise. Researchers have found that
developing good sleep habits is very important and refreshes the
mind and allows the body to repair itself. |
